The Lord Jesus Brings His People through Death into Life by the Preaching of Repentance
Amos did not choose to be a prophet, but the Lord took him “from following the flock” and said to him, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel” (Amos 7:15). It was a hard word given him to preach: King Jeroboam would “die by the sword,” and Israel would “go into exile away from his land” (Amos 7:10–11). For this word, Amos was hated and threatened. St. John the Baptist also suffered for his faithful preaching of repentance. King Herod “sent and seized John and bound him in prison,” even though he knew that John “was a righteous and holy man” (Mark 6:17, 20). Out of pride and fear, Herod “sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head” (Mark 6:27). Yet in Christ, St. John the Baptist “has been raised from the dead” (Mark 6:14, 16). For Christ is the destruction of death itself “before the foundation of the world,” and even now by faith, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” has blessed us in Christ “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Eph. 1:3–4). Through Baptism into Christ, you also “were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” for life and salvation (Eph. 1:13).

19 ἡ δὲ Ἡρῳδιὰς ἐνεῖχεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο·
20 ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Ἰωάννην, εἰδὼς αὐτὸν ἄνδρα δίκαιον καὶ ἅγιον, καὶ συνετήρει αὐτόν, καὶ ἀκούσας αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ⸀ἠπόρει, καὶ ἡδέως αὐτοῦ ἤκουεν.
21 Καὶ γενομένης ἡμέρας εὐκαίρου ὅτε Ἡρῴδης τοῖς γενεσίοις αὐτοῦ δεῖπνον ⸀ἐποίησεν τοῖς μεγιστᾶσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ τοῖς πρώτοις τῆς Γαλιλαίας,
22 καὶ εἰσελθούσης τῆς θυγατρὸς ⸂αὐτῆς τῆς⸃ Ἡρῳδιάδος καὶ ὀρχησαμένης ⸂καὶ ἀρεσάσης⸃ τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ καὶ τοῖς συνανακειμένοις, ⸂εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς⸃ τῷ κορασίῳ· Αἴτησόν με ὃ ἐὰν θέλῃς, καὶ δώσω σοι·

28 καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ τὸ κοράσιον ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
29 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦλθον καὶ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτὸ ἐν μνημείῳ.
Literal Translation
Mark 6:14–29
(14) And Herod the king heard, for His name became publicly known. And he said, John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and because of this the works of power operate in Him.
(15) Others said, He is Elijah; and others said, He is a prophet or as one of the prophets.
(16) But hearing, Herod said, This one is John whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.
(17) For having sent, Herod himself had seized John and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
(18) For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.
(19) And Herodias held it against him, and desired to kill him, but was not able.
(20) For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a holy and just man, and kept him safe. And hearing him, he did many things, and gladly heard from him.
(21) And a suitable day having come, when Herod made a dinner for his great ones on his birthday, also the chiliarchs, and the first ones of Galilee.
(22) And the daughter of Herodias herself entering, and having danced, she also pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the girl, Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.
(23) And he swore to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give to you, up to half of my kingdom.
(24) And going out, she said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
(25) And immediately going in with haste to the king, she asked, saying, I desire that at once you give to me the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
(26) And having become deeply grieved, but because of the oaths and those reclining together, the king did not wish to reject her.
(27) And the king sending a guardsman at once, he ordered his head to be brought. And going, he beheaded him in the prison,
(28) and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother.
(29) And having heard, his disciples went and took his corpse and placed it in a tomb.
